Prep Chorus Curriculum

Prep Chorus introduces first and second graders to singing together in a choir format. Prep Chorus meets once a week for one hour; rehearsals include games, movement, and singing with an emphasis on creating sound as a group.

Prep Choristers Learn…

  • The solfège syllables and hand signs. (Solfège is a method for teaching aural skills, pitch, and sight-reading in Western music. Every note of a scale is given its own unique syllable (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti), which is used to sing that note every time it appears.)

  • Basic sight-singing skills using solfège, and how to apply those skills to choral repertoire

  • To sing in unison and in two parts

  • Rhythmic note values and notations and how to chant basic patterns

Repertoire

The Prep Chorus repertoire includes rounds and partner songs from American and global traditions. Choristers will sing in different languages and learn about the world around them through the repertoire that is chosen for each session. Singers will also sing other genres including pop and jazz.

Each session culminates in a performance for family and friends. Singers get to share the songs learned throughout the session and are introduced to age-appropriate expectations for stage conduct.
